MoveMaps Tutorial

This brief tutorial will show you how to display different map overlays for the state of Georgia and how to access graphical and tabular information pertaining to various administrative regions for the state.

How to use Move maps:

The Move maps section displays predefined overlays using up to three out of four separate attributes, or layers for Georgia. The four layers are of the state's counties, Regional Development Centers, Forest Inventory Analysis units and physiographic regions (Figure 1).

Figure 1

Counties Regional Development Center (RDC) regions    Fiber Inventory Analysis (FIA) units             Physiographic Regions

To access these overlays first take a couple of minutes to study Figure 2B, which shows that with any particular combination of backgrounds and attributes, you may display a particular overlay. As a working example, on Figure 2A move your mouse over any "C", "R", "F", or "P" with a blue background to preview each overlay.  When you would like to study a specifically previewed image more closely, simply click on the letter corresponding to the map you are previewing., and the map and an information   box will display as in Figure 3.

When the map displays, you may in turn move your mouse over any selected overlay, and then the information unique to whichever chosen attribute, ie county, region , or unit the mouse was clicked over is displayed in the information box to the right of the map (see Figure 3 below).

For example, the map in Figure 3 would be displayed by clicking on the "P" at the bottom of the blue column located at the far right of Figure 2A. Unique information for a Physiographic region (delineated by the blue lines on this map) will be displayed in the information box whenever the mouse is placed over any given region.

Additional information for any region can be found by clicking on the map.  For example, if you were to click on the Coastal Plain region in Figure 3, you will be taken to a new page (Figure 4) with tables containing data  on how the land in the Coastal Plain region is broken up into different land-type, ownership, and stand-type classes.

A set of tables similar to these or a more gneral FIA database can be viewed for every county, RDC region, FIA unit, or physiographic region simply by clicking on whichever county, region or unit you desire information for.
